Managing IVDD – Every Journey is Unique

Managing IVDD – Every Journey is Unique

When a dachshund experiences an IVDD episode, it can be overwhelming and emotional for their owners. Questions like “Will my dog walk again?”, “How long will recovery take?”, and “What if they have another episode?” often race through our minds. The truth is, every IVDD journey is different, and while we can rely on expert guidance and shared experiences, no two dogs will follow the exact same path to recovery.

What to Expect During Recovery
– No Set Timeline
– Some dachshunds bounce back quickly, while others need weeks or even months of rehabilitation. – Recovery depends on factors like the severity of the episode, treatment choice (surgical vs. conservative), and the individual dog’s response to care

Ups and Downs are Normal
– Progress is rarely a straight line. There will be good days and setbacks, but patience and consistency with rehabilitation, crate rest (if required), and ongoing care are key.

Mobility Outcomes Vary
– While many IVDD dogs regain full mobility, others may need long-term support, such as assistive devices (like wheels) or ongoing physiotherapy.
– Regardless of the outcome, dogs adapt incredibly well with the right care and love.

Emotional Challenges
– Seeing your dog struggle can be emotionally draining. It’s important to seek support—whether from your vet, a canine rehabilitation specialist, or fellow IVDD dog owners. You’re not alone in this journey.

Focusing on What You Can Control
– While the specialists can’t predict every outcome, they can provide the best possible care.
– Commit to a structured recovery plan, follow specialist advice, and remember that IVDD management is a lifelong journey.
– Celebrate the small victories and, most importantly, enjoy every moment with your dachshund—whether they’re walking, scooting, or rolling through life with their signature spirit!
